10 Prestigious Golf Clubs of Spain


Spain has more than 200 golf courses, each with its own charm and difficulty level. Below are just 10 of the elite (info from the Golf Holidays Spain Website):

1. The Valderrama Golf Club is the finest and oldest golf clubs of Spain. It was built by American golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. in 1974. It was later expanded in 1984 by Jones, and by 1999, the18 hole course was rated number one by the Golf World Magazine. The Club has played host to the Ryder Cup in 1997 and the WGC American Express Championship in 1999 and 2000.

2. La Manga Club was designed by Robert Dean Putman in 1971 and has three 18-hole courses, the North, South and West. The Club has hosted many top international golf tournaments like the Spanish Opens, the European Ladies Team Championship, the Spanish PGA etc.

3. Club de Golf Bonmont was founded by Swiss national Henry Ferdinand Lavanchy in 1990 and designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. The 18 hole golf course has played host to the 1991 and 1996 Catalan Open.

4. Desert Springs Golf Club is Europe's only desert course called the Indiana which has been designed by Peter McEvoy. Opened in 2002, the club has already hosted the Spanish Amateur Men's Championship in 2004.

5. El Bosque Golf Club opened in 1975 and was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. The 18 hole course was especially designed to provide challenges to all levels of skills with obstacles like water, bunkers, wooded copse etc. The Club has hosted many tournaments like the Queens Cup, the Mediterranean Open etc.

6. Empordà Golf Club is the best resorts of Catalonia and has been designed by American architect Robert van Hagge. The Club has two 18 hole courses, the Empordà and the Empordà Forest. The Club is one of the PGA European Tour Qualifying Schools.

7. Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club was designed by Spaniard Severiano Ballesteros on the foothills of the Sierra Blanca mountains, and was opened in 1991. The 18 hole golf course has ravines, streams and well placed hazards to provide a challenge to all levels of players.

8. La Finca Algorfa Golf Club lies in the province of Alicante, and was opened in 2001. The 18 hole golf course was designed by José Gancedo with its most noteworthy feature being the reserve hole where regardless of unexpected circumstances, a player can still complete the 18 hole round.

9. San Roque Club boasts of two unique golf courses, the Old and the New, with the Old rated as the finest in Europe. The Old was designed by Dave Thomas in 1990, the bunkers redesigned later on by Seve Ballesteros. The New Course was designed by Perry Dye in 2002. The Club has hosted the Open de España in 2005 and 2006.
10. La Reserva de Sotogrande Golf Club has just recently opened its 18 hole course in 2003. Designed by American architect Cabell Robinson, the club is located in Costa del Sol, between two valleys that form the letter 'Y'.
