TravelZIN

Flying is an experience that holds frustration for a great many people. Most of this is due to communication and expectations. In her work for American Airlines, writer Sandra Eichner wanted to delve into this concept headfirst and hopefully alleviate some of the stress as well as bring a certain benevolent attitude towards the world’s largest airline with the biggest fleet and highest revenue of any airline company in the world.

AA is the preference of a large percentage of the public that chooses to fly and their loyalty program, AAdvantage, is ranked as one of the very best, proving that American Airlines values their customers and wants them to know this. Finding the perfect words for this message was the main focus of Sandra Eichner's work, which ranged from the brand campaign itself across new route launches to the AAdvantage program itself. Air travel has become so common in the last few decades that many have forgotten how its prevalence has changed our view of travel since the days of trains and busses. In the most polite and yet revealing of manners, Sandra wanted to remind the public that the ability to climb aboard and be anywhere in the world in a matter of hours is still a magical ability, regardless of the choices you make in regard to budget.

It’s easy for our attitudes to rise and find a homeostasis, causing us to forget how amazing certain benefits of living in the modern world can be. Sandra notes that the American Airlines project was intimidating for her to be involved in as it was such a huge campaign. That moderate concern soon gave way to awe as she sat at her desk marveling in the imagery before her. She recalls, “I felt like I was traveling the world myself at my desk. The stunning aerial images from around the globe with the American Airlines logo majestically passing above them, that almost made me feel like I was flying myself. Those images are very memorable. Also, with every new route launch I immersed myself in the destinations. For example, I feel like I know New Zealand a lot better even though I haven't been there yet. The collaboration was also amazing. Working with Scott Pridgen and the great Dave Swartz on the design side and developing the AAdvantage Elite Kit together was fantastic.” The very nature of a writer is to use their creativity to transport us to an emotional place that we may not physically be immersed within. Being immersed in the grandeur of flying, Sandra was reminded that there are so many things which occur in our lives which we have no control over. This led her to the thought “It's more about attitude than altitude.” This ever so polite way of reminding us that it is truly an incredible occurrence when you consider what modern air travel offers, it’s hard to grumble about a flight delay or crowded lines. It seems very Zen for an ad perspective but thinking positively can actually reshape your experience.

All this is not to say that Eichner’s work was simply focused on good thoughts. One part of her role was writing the copy for the re-designed AAdvantage welcome kits and website. There were two vital parts of her work on this. First, she needed to develop a distinct, premium tone for each of the five frequent flyer tiers that's reflective of its respective status. This can sometimes be a matter of fine nuances. AA wants to show ALL of its customers respect in both name and compensation, calling them "The World's Greatest Flyers". But of course, the more they fly the greater, savvier and valuable they get. It’s not a “one size fits all” situation and Sandra needed to subtly work out these variations. The loyal customers who enroll in AAdvantage fall into a variety of categories: AAdvantage Gold, AAdvantage Platinum, AAdvantage Platinum Pro and AAdvantage Executive Platinum, and an invitation-only program called Concierge Key for the most loyal and special among them, and the benefits of a Platinum Pro member differ from a Platinum member, etc. In reference to the previously mentioned paramount sense of communication, Sandra was key in communicating these differences to AAdvantage members and potential members through the luxurious booklets included in each Elite Kits as well as the program's website.

Scott Pridgen, designer at CP+B confirms this writer’s immense contributions to this project stating, “When we were tasked with the re-design of the AAdvantage elite program, the bar was very high. The American Airlines brand had just been re-launched and we all wanted to do our best to capture the spirit of the campaign in every piece of the AAdvantage work, making it stand out among loyalty programs in every aspect. Just as the design had to reflect the quality, luxury, and customer service that awaits the World's Greatest Flyers, so did the copy. Sandra had the difficult task of perfectly bringing to life what makes each of the five tiers unique while simultaneously presenting how they all share a common dedication to the flyers and the special status all AAdvantage members have. It took an extraordinary writer to create a distinct tone for each tier all the while infusing the writing with the voice and attitude of the brand campaign. Sandra not only did a stellar job on that, thanks to her skillful writing, but was also able to strike the perfect balance between creating a desire in flyers to reach the next tier with even more desirable benefits. During all of this, it was vital members understood that they had already reached a special status no matter how much higher they could go. That’s quite a balancing act and Sandra performed it masterfully!”

Communication, experience, and perception are all pillars of living a harmonious life…no matter what your situations. As a frequent flyer herself for business, Sandra Eichner understands the intermittent challenges of air travel. Being a part of this world on a regular basis has helped her to see that a flight delay or any type of inconvenience is just that, a momentary inconvenience. It’s all part of a shared experience. As Sandra likes to say, “You never fly alone.”

For those of us who don’t want life to pass by without taking a bite out of the world, the joy of relating our travels is only superseded by the experience of breathing it in.

Writer, Amanda Smith, has taken this idea one step further by using her talent as a writer to encourage others to take it upon themselves to venture to the far reaches of the planet. As a travel writer, she plants seeds in the fertile soil of aspiring adventurers who take to lands like Japan, Australia, Europe, and elsewhere.

Exploring is intuitive for this Adelaide-native, but she recognizes that her words have been the catalyst for many less proactive souls. It’s one of the things she’s most proud of in her career. She credits travel with bringing her out of her shell and transforming life into an HD experience.

Having ventured to more than fifty countries, Smith’s internal compass for what is unique and appealing about a location has been honed through personal application. Amanda penned a series for South Australian Tourism, using her expertise as a travel writer to inform others about the many great moments they might experience in her homeland.

Individuality is often the secret to an enjoyable experience abroad. It’s not about forcing one’s self to revel in what appeals to the masses, but rather in finding what unexpected environment might unlock something in yourself. Amanda has written about the ubiquity of Kangaroos in Australia and the festival of light near Uluru, giving her personal take as a News Corp columnist.

The enthusiasm she possesses for discovery is nearly unbridled and most certainly persuasive. The aforementioned individuality is key to Smith’s success as a travel writer with numerous clients across the world. Her articles typically feel like having coffee with a close friend who communicates where she’s been, why you should go, and spells out how to best navigate your course.

She concedes, “I think it’s important to keep in mind that my views are subjective and while I can ethically present my experiences about a place, it might be not what others will feel. I do aim to put a lot of personality and energy into a place but I’d never write something that I didn’t feel was the truth. I’m not afraid to say ‘Hey, this was my experience, but it might not be for everyone…”

When Brand SA (South Australia) held an event with a select group of writers to write about and promote Southern Australia’s prominence as a wine region, they enlisted Amanda for her talent and her youthful way of communicating. Brand SA had taken note of the Smith’s unique voice as a travel writer and wanted her to bring attention to the wine region.

Flying around in a private plane to prestigious events and wineries is not the typical M.O. of most bloggers. Amanda’s web based approach and style was the inverse of many of the print-based writers who had been previously used; an invigorating and successful innovation for Brand SA. In utilizing social media, Smith communicated in real time and manifested a tone of interaction rather than blatant marketing.

The real secret is that, when used responsibly and correctly, social media can be a tool for conversing and sharing ideas rather than simply selling. Amanda’s style creates an ease between her clients and those who appreciate what she offers in her words.

If there is one thing that Smith’s career has established it’s that there is a huge difference between promotion and communication. This has as much to do with intent as it does with talent. A salesperson can sell a product simply to make money or they can do so because they truly believe in the product’s greatness.

Amanda Smith found that marrying her passion for writing and travel became a vehicle for her to do both as a career. It’s undeniable that so many readers are drawn to her work because of the honesty found therein. She has pursued the new avenue of online writing as well as the traditional (her novel The Inner Fire: A deep exploration by a traveller, for travellers is soon to be released).

The most successful actors are often described as great because of their honesty in front of the camera; the same template can be used to describe Amanda’s words. Travel writing has given her the means to use her voice (in written form) to express herself and aid others. It’s something which makes life itself more exciting with a wide range of experiences.

She notes, “I love travel. Like life, you have to accept the range of moments it offers. I’ve had so many experiences as a writer and I wouldn’t trade any of them. I was in Egypt during the Arab Spring. There were over 200,000 protestors very close to us in Tahir Square. We were on a rooftop above watching it all unfold. I’ve seen history take place which effected the world. I’d never have guessed that writing would have made my life so incredibly exciting and interesting.”

EuroDelays is your internet based aviation expert that assists air passengers whose flights were delayed, canceled or overbooked. I wish I knew them before. For example when my flight from Kuala Lumpur to Vienna had been overbooked and they forced me to fly with another company through Bangkok to Frankfurt which was far far away from my real destination. Or when arriving in Helsinki around midnight my connection flight was canceled and I had to spend an extra night at an airport instead of being with my family.

Valeriy V. Sirotyuk is the founder and CEO of EuroDelays. He and his team members are very experienced aviation lawyers based in Chicago, Illinois dealing with both U.S. and international aspects of the aviation industry and customer protection laws.

On their website, you can submit your claim by filling a form and the rest will be arranged by EuroDelays as the followings:

1. In the first step, you send them your flight data. Based on your data they determine if your flight is eligible for compensation.

2. EuroDelays will take your case to airlines to get your compensation. If the airline refuses to pay, they will enforce your claim in the appropriate US or EU court at their expense (!).

3. You receive your compensation within 4-6 weeks.

In an interview with Valeriy V. Sirotyuk he explains the importance of customer protection:

"Modern Aviation is the magic of our days: based on cutting-edge technologies, it provides jobs for millions and indispensable services to our global society. Notwithstanding its highest societal values, aviation is still a for-profit business. To maximize profits, an airline may try to apply "tricks" to avoid its compliance to different areas of aviation regulations. All airlines are obligated to compensate their passengers for various flight-related issues that might emerge. However, statistics show that each day, thousands of passengers are not compensated for issues such as flight delays, cancellations, or overbookings. I have created EuroDelays to protect your flight rights efficiently and professionally."

Shooting photographs on your journey and capturing the right image involves so much more than just clicking on the camera. Travel photography by its very nature is very exciting and inspirational, and each place you visit has its unique characters, look, and ambiance. To take a good photo, it has to grasp all these qualities, and most importantly tell a story.

It's unlikely to remember the thrill of adventure, exciting experiences, and the amazement of gazing at spectacular views of mountains and beaches. Photographs bring back the sensations and feelings as they trigger our memories.

Photographer, Matthew David Parker, shares some of the best tips that will help you take great images of memorable journeys.

1. Research

Doing some research about your travel destination helps you figure out what is out there and what it has to offer, so you know where to go to shoot the best photographs. Gather the most information and learn everything you can about the location by reading travel books, brochures, or researching the web. Also, you can investigate further by learning the traditions, cultures, landmarks, and traditional festivals and carnivals of the country. There are probably many interesting places and aspects you're not aware of, that's where research comes in.

2. Know Your Equipment

It's crucial to know how to use the camera, the scene modes and the camera settings before you go on your trip, especially if it's new. Taking the right lenses, batteries, chargers and lots of memory cards are also important.

3. Take Notes

Time and age fade memories, so taking notes is essential for travel photography. When you see a place for the first time, feel the excitement, the taste and smell of the food, notice the way people dress, or whatever it may be, make sure to jot it down. Writing down first impressions, descriptions, details, experiences and what you've learned about the people, will awaken your senses and memories of the time you were there.

4. Be Quick

You always have to be ready and quick to capture moments that may not happen again. Static subjects such as mountains, landmarks, or trees are not going anywhere. But a soaring eagle, the perfect waves of the ocean, or the emotional reactions on people's faces are not likely to be seen again.

5. Shoot At Night, Or Early In The Morning

The illuminated cities and towns or the glistening lights on the water reflecting off the boats look spectacular at night. Shooting during sunset or right before it gets completely dark also provides amazing images with less dense shadows.

Getting up early in the morning to avoid traffic and crowds is worth it. The stunning colors in the sky right before sunrise rewards you with the best light – soft and warm. And photographing local people setting up their market stalls and locals going to work, gives you authentic and natural pictures.
There are so many beautiful sights and scenes in this world that you would like to remember. Captivating the perfect images allows you to rekindle those moments that live on through generations.

I spent like two days in Lisbon (Portugal). It was one of my usual quick business trips. A crazy jump and short impression which makes me think a few days after: was it true or I just had dream?

Portugal

I had prejudices. I imagined Lisbon like Athen or Naples. Nice, nice, sunny and historical but let’s be honest it's dirty, messy and untidy. That's what I expected from Lisbon, too.

Portugal

But Lisbon has surprised me. It's a very nice, tidy city. Yes, my first impression was that its a very clean place. Not like those German sterile "do not touch anything" places. Narrow streets, little one- eyed tramways, several cafés.

Portugal

I felt so bad that I had only a few hours to look around. To my melancholic mood that city was perfect. To sit in a Café watching the people and life around. The colorful buildings the real blue sky with the white clouds. And Lisbon is not as crowded (yet) as for example, Prague is. No flows of tourists, you have your own place. I am sure I will be back there. Not alone. This place is the best for dates, every stone is romantic in Portugal.

Portugal

Even in the countryside those single churches, monasteries, the white painted family houses are like paintings became real.

Portugal

So now I promise to myself…to take my wife to Lisbon. I will invite her to a Café or rather to a cozy restaurant and it will be like inviting her to the world to the atmosphere which is so often in my mind.

So the thing is, I had been writing a lot about our travels in different European cities and Asia and my husband said I forgot to cover one important city – that is the city we used to live in – Budapest. Today you will see not just beautiful panorama photo of Budapest like this, I will also bring you around to show you how you can maximize your trip, if you only have 48 hours in Budapest.

1. Castle District

Buda Castle district and Chain Bridge (Lanchid) is the other amazing sight besides the innovative nightlife, culture and ruined gardens. These establishments using abandoned properties also give the creativity outlet for young startups, extending their businesses to the younger group, affording their beers and beverages at very little expense. If you touched down at the Budapest airport, take the airport shuttle (shuttle.hu) or taxi services (Fotaxi which is the more reliable taxi provider). Whether you are traveling to Budapest by flights (offered by Wizzair, BA, Easyjet or Jet2.com) or by trains, you can see this beautiful night scene crossing the Danube River. If you come by train and arriving at Nyugati Station, you can take tram no.4 or no. 6 to cross the Danube river. The Royal Castle and the Castle District (Neo-gothic Matthias Church) and Fishermen's Bastion (Halaszbastya) can be your day one program. See the seven turrets on this mock rampart which symbolises the seven Hungarian tribes who came to Europe at first.

Recently, there has been a lot of write up on CNN travel, on BBC and major online websites that Hungary/Budapest is really one of the most inexpensive city to visit. The value is so great (1 Euro is equivalent to 304 Hungarian Forints) plus Budapest is so beautiful. How exactly can you make your 48 hours so fun-filled? Where exactly are the places and sights to see? And since we used to be living in Budapest, this makes us one of the best people around to provide you an online Budapest guide to spend your 48 hours well. Let's start with the famous Hungarian snack, Langos.

2. Langos

Lángos
Flickr/Anna Balint

So this is the much brag about Hungarian flat bread speciality called Langos. This is made of flour, yeast, salt and water. What is so special that you must try it is that, it is very crispy. The toppings gives it one of a kind, unique taste. In Hungary, you must try the sour cream. The other classic topping is cheese and some garlic juice sprinkled on top. Nothing more. After you've tried it, should you decide to make it at home, you may check out the recipe here. Do not underestimate this Langos. It is very heavy and the best places you can eat it on the spot is at the Central Market Hall or the market (piac) behind Mammut shopping mall. Then spend the next 2-3 hours walking around the free places to burn it all off. Here is a list of free places to walk and suggested sights to explore the beauty of Budapest.

3. New York Cafe Budapest

New York Cafe - Budapest
Flickr/ Glenn and Lina

Walking on the Grand Boulevard is a must. Then, do not missed the opulent edifice architecture where the New York Cafe Budapest is. It is part of the Boscolo Hotel, a luxury 5-star hotel on the Erzebet korut 9. The reason why you must check it is because, it was famed the world's most wonderful cafe. In those days, the elite of Hungary's literary world hung around here often.

4. Confectionary (Lukacs Cukraszda)

Living It Up
flickr/ Richard and Jo deMeester

If not, you can stopped for a freshly brewed coffee at Lukacs Cukraszda for some beautifully made confectionary. This confectionary (in Hungarian is 'Cukraszda') is located in the inner city and central pest area. Perfect after walking the Andrassy Avenue or if you are somewhere near the Heroes' Square or near the Vorosmarty street.

5. World Heritage: Andrassy Avenue

momo | Andrássy út
flickr/zannnie

Lots of villas of the noble families lined the Andrassy Avenue which is an elegant World Heritage Site connected to the City Park (Varosliget). The eclectic neo-Renaissance houses, villas and palaces by distinguished architects can be found here. Try the first subway line in continental Europe, the yellow line or the Millennium Underground Railway M1. Some key places to check if you are around here are: Elizabeth Square, Oktogon, State Opera House, Liszt Ferenc square, Kodaly Korond, House of Terror Museum, Bajza utca (residential villas), Heroes' Square.

6. Cafe Gerbeaud

  Gerbeaud

If you like these outdoor traditional coffeehouses setting, you may also check out Cafe Gerbeaud. The interior design of this confectionary has special stucco ceiling of Rokoko style of Louis XIV of France. There are also Maria Theresa of Austria inspired chandeliers.

7. Ruined Pubs and Gardens

  Szimpla Kert

However, if you want to check out the currently famous ruined courtyard and gardens, you may check this Szimpla kert. Kazinczy area has a good list of ruined gardens and ask for a 'froccs'. In the spring, have a coffee and in summer, you're recommended to have a cold beer.

8. Goulash

Goulash
flickr/rdpeyton

Must taste the authentic Hungarian goulash when in Budapest. Best is when they are served in pots like this.

9. Fresh Produce of Hungary

center market
flickr/ scat blanc

Fresh vegetables, whole and mostly close to perfect are presented nicely. The thin skin TV paprika are mild even sweet, while the eros paprika (the light green ones) are hot, peppery hot. The large vine ripened tomatoes are ever so beautiful and delicious. In Spring, the strawberries and raspberries are in season and not to be missed! You can find them sold by kilos in markets and various fruits and green grocers stalls.

10. Gothic Revival Parliament

Parliament Building - Budapest

This Gothic Revival style, notable landmark of Hungary is the Hungarian Parliament building in Budapest. It is one of Europe's oldest legislative buildings and one of the tallest building in Budapest. You can find it on the Lajos Kossuth square on the bank of the Danube where its main facade faces the River Danube.

11. Tram No. 2
Tram, Budapest
Flickr/Bronwen Lee
First, do take tram no. 2 for a sweeping view of Danube and Pest after you've purchase some BKV public transportation tickets. Be sure to validate your tickets before the ride and Tram No. 2 runs from Jaszai Mari ter by the Margaret Bridge (Margit hid). So it serves as an enjoyable introduction to the city down to the Pest side of the Danube river.

When you pass the neo-Gothic Parliament and Museum of Ethnography, you can see some Hungarian folk art, just be sure to avoid it on Mondays. From Kossuth ter is how you can get there. Then pass this Szechenyi Chain Bridge as it is historically the first bridge between Buda and Pest. Castle District is right on the Buda side. Other two worthwhile places to see is the Fovam Square (Fovam ter) and the Central Market Hall (Nagycsarnok). Today, the addition to this area to sight see is the multi-purpose Balna (formerly known as CET Building) which looks like a whale. This glass-roofed Balna Budapest is the latest state-of-the-art cultural and entertainment shopping center. For culture seekers, there are galleries, shops, cafes, exhibition, restaurants etc. So from Mondays to Thursday, it is opened from 8am til midnight, and weekends til 2am.

12. Palace of Arts

The Hungarian National Theatre and the Palace of Arts at night
Flickr/romeodesign

Classic attractions are Palace of Arts (mupa.hu) which is the finest concert halls in Europe. If you like to shop for some souvenirs, the best suggestions are paprika, fresh vegetables, salami. The thing to note is to avoid the stalls on the right hand side as they are targetting tourists mainly. Then in the afternoon for lunch, do check out the Hungarian styled tapas and fuller meals with a fresh duck salad.  Of course we want to mention the Hungarian wines.

13. Thermal Baths

Széchenyi Bath Budapest
Flickr/Zsolt Bugarszki

You can make the second part of the afternoon a cultural tour to the Applied Arts Museum (Corvin negyed station) and check out the Art Nouveau elements of Hungary - Odon Lechner that has a pure white interior. It encompasses the Hungarian and Turkic ornamentation on the outside and features permanent displays in particular the Art Nouveau wooden and gold clock.

For the health-conscious, try the Themal bath (szechenyibath.com). If you want to also have a swim, do *bring your swimming cap! It is optional to schedule some time to Szentharomsag utca 7, to see the Golden Eagle Pharmacy museum at Tarnok utca 18 (and again except Monday please). The other is the Semmelweis.Museum.hu where you can see those questionable medical tools and cures.

For the artistic and soulful people, the Royal Palace and the Hungarian National Gallery (except Mondays) offers you works by Hungary’s finest artists: Tivadar Kosztka Csontvary who used to be the 19th century visionary whom Picasso admired. Other worthy to mention artist are Jozsef Rippl-Ronai who features Art Nouveau canvasses.

In spring or summer, you can access the Siklo Funicular to get down the river bank. Cross Lanchid to the Art Nouveau Gresham Palace on Szecheny ter is also a nice activity. Then proceed to the glass-roofed lobby of Four Seasons Hotel and enjoy yourself to a cuppa coffee.

14. Glorious Hungarian Cuisine

Squealer, The Pork Knuckle

Brunch places which are child/baby-friendly restaurant which we have personally tried is the Pest Vakvarju Restaurant at Pauley Ede street. In their menu is this pork knuckle dish called the Squealer that is cooked in "Joasszony style", and it is definitely worth a try. After the meal, have a nice stroll or walk in the park. Parks you can choose from the Hosok ter to Varosliget walk, the City Park, to museums to playgrounds.

15. Fairy-tale like Vajdahunyad Castle

If you are adventurous enough or being there as a couple, do try the Rowing Lake in the spring or summer. Of which, it turns to ice rink in winter for some ice-skating. One of my favourite place is the fairy-tale Vajdahunyad Castle.

Sydney

If you like beach lifestyle, Sydney is a great place to explore surf beaches, boating and sailing, kayaking, doing outdoor fitness, snorkelling and outdoor pools. Must do beaches include Bondi Beach, Cronulla Beach, Dee Why Beach, Manly Beach and Narrabeen Beach.

Sydney

Particularly in summer, Sydney has a vibrant beach culture – sunning in the sand, taking to the water, or simply chilling in a beachside bar or café. With family and friends, snorkel, build sandcastles, play beach volleyball, dive, take a scenic coastal walk, or even run along the sand.

Sydney

The Sydney Opera House has such a beautiful architectural design – inside out! It is not just iconic, it is a place that provides a great treat to the senses. Photography lovers will certainly love the sunrise and sunset locations from Sydney skyline, CBD (downtown), Kirribilli, panorama of Sydney Harbour, Mrs Macquarie’s Point from the Chair or walking path on the Farm Cove bay bank and Milson’s Point in the late afternoon.

Sydney

The other great spots are Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon Lookout, McMahons Point (Blues Point), Cremorne Wharf at dawn, Balls Head at Waverton, Larkin Street Lookout, Bennelong Point, Circular Quay at Sydney Passengers Terminal, Darling Harbour at Cockle Bay, and last but not least at Bradley’s Head.

Sydney

Most important part of your travel planning of course is traveling to Sydney Australia, you will need to have a visa.

Traveling to UK, first stop is London. London is a metropolitan area of more than 13 million inhabitants. This capital city of England possess the beautiful historical River Thames, Tower of London, Palace of Westminster, Buckingham Palace, Piccadilly Circus, London Eye, Trafalgar Square, Tate Modern, British Library, National Gallery, London Underground and of course Tower Bridge.

The best time to visit London is March which bears the first signs of spring. Great to be at the Kew Gardens or London's top gardens - just any one! You can visibly see the lawns covered in purple and white crocuses.
