Deciding to trek in the Himalayan
Mountains is an adventurous and exciting venture, however to insure that
you get to see all the magical vistas and sites it is best to travel with an experienced
and competent Himalayan trekking tour.
The word "Himalaya" means abode of snow in
Sanskrit; the mountain range stretches in a gentle arch for 2500km; it is home
to the world's highest peak, Mount Everest; the range separates India and Tibet
and crosses Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, India and Tibet; many sites in the
Himalayas are sacred to Buddhists and Hindus; there are about 15,000 glaciers
in the Himalayas and many major rivers originate in these mountains.
The Himalayas have always held a mystical charm to travelers
who want to discover untouched nature and forces greater than man. The
spiritual connection that the mountains have with Buddhism and the many
monasteries located in the mountain foot hills have also sparked the
imagination of travelers. The terrain offers deciduous forests, stark contrasts
between bright green valleys and snow capped peaks, rocks, jungle like
vegetation and the chance to encounter locals who live a remote and isolated
life.
Trekking in the Himalayas was once an adventure holiday that
was out of reach for most people but now the range can be accessed from several
points, in particular from Nepal and Tibet. Today tour companies can offer a
myriad of ways to explore the Himalayas, not just by climbing but also by
cycling, 4X4 jeep safaris in the foot hills, trekking, climbing, mountain bike
excursions and the chance to camp in the middle of nowhere.
Himalaya Adventure Tour
Treat yourself with a challenging 22 day cycling tour in the
Tibetan Plateaus. The tour covers 1,000kms beginning in Lhasa, Tibet. The tour
includes sightseeing in the capital and daily cycling of between 35km and 97km
as you make your way into the Himalayas. Some of the highlights include a stop
at Shigaste and the Mt. Everest Base Camp with the tour concluding in Kathmandu,
Nepal.
Himalayan Holiday
For a slightly
lighter itinerary take a tour along the Sichuan-Tibet Highway between the
Tibetan Plateau and Western Sichuan. This route takes 14 days, beginning in
Chengdu, the capital of Southern China and ending in Lhasa, Tibet. The tour
goes through remote areas, stunning scenery and transportation is by vehicle.
Some of the highlights include the 400 year old Nyitso Monastery, a visit to
the Derge scripture printing press, Namtso Lake and sightseeing in Lhasa. This
tour option is ideal if you are interested in getting to know the different
cultures, ethnic groups and sects in this region.
Trekking in the Himalayas is an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime
experience; the pristine countryside is unparalleled, together with the magic
that these mountains have possessed for thousands of years.
